Pointing your domain to SmugMug if your DNS is controlled by Cloudflare

Intro

Cloudflare is a great Content Delivery Network service that offers a large number of tools for your website.  One of the tools that you can use them for – is their DNS service – which is free!  You can point your domain to Cloudfare and control your DNS record there – great if your current domain registrar does not allow you to set your DNS records the way you want.

Preparation

If your domain is not yet connected to Cloudflare – you will need to do this first before you will be able to make changes to your DNS records.  Cloudflare has a great setup guide – here.

You do not need to buy their premium service – because we will only be using their free DNS service.

Setting up your CNAME record

Log in to your Cloudflare account and click on the domain that you would like to point to your SmugMug account – in my case it is my main SmugMug domain – photom.me

Cloudflare dns section

This will open a list of all DNS records that have been migrated from your old DNS provider/domain registrar.  Search in the list if you have any www CNAME record – if there are any present – delete it by clicking the X icon.

Now you will need to add a new www CNAME record which will point to SmugMug’s server – domains.smugmug.com.  The entry should look like this:

CNAME record on Cloudflare to point your domain to SmugMug

Before you click the ADD RECORD button make sure that you turn off Cloudflare CDN for this record – you can do this by clicking on the orange cloud icon located before the ADD RECORD button – so the icon appears grey as on above screenshot.

The last thing you have to do for your CNAME record is to click the ADD RECORD button.

Naked domain forwarding

In order to make your naked domain yourdomain.com point to SmugMug – you will need to create domain forwarding.  Otherwise your visitors will only be able to access your SmugMug site if they enter your domain with www at the beginning www.yourdomain.com

For this part I will show you how I have forwarded my naked domain photom.me to www.photom.me

Create a CNAME record that looks like this:

The @ means that we are forwarding the naked domain photom.me to www.photom.me (in my case).  In your case it will be yourdomain.com to www.yourdomain.com (replace yourdomain.com with your own domain name).

Make sure that you turn off Cloudflare CDN for this record – you can do this by clicking on the orange cloud icon located before the ADD RECORD button – so the icon appears grey as on the above screenshot.

The last thing you have to do for your CNAME record is to click the ADD RECORD button.

That is it!  You will need to allow up to 72 hours for these changes to propagate and then you will be able to add the domain to your SmugMug account.
